Driving is a big part of a lot of our lives, especially in the United States (the car crazy country), and you may find yourself unexpectantly participating in driving methods that may be wasting your gas without you knowing it.
1. Lugging around junk/excess weight
You would be surprised how much weight that excess junk in your car is adding, and if your car is front-wheel drive, you are putting extra strain on your car from all the weight that is on your rear axle. This can result in a decrease of the tire’s grip and make your car work harder, and cause you to burn more gas.
2. Improperly Inflated Tires
More gas is used when your tires are under-inflated. Did you know that tires underinflated by just 10 PSI can cost you over 5 mph or more? 5 mpg may not seem like much, but it adds up. Why not save your money for something you want and make sure your tires are at the right pressure. Both you and your car will be happy in the long run.
Refer to your owner’s manual to find out the correct PSI for your tires. It is important to make sure your tires are properly inflated before you hit the road because you are not only burning more gas, but underinflated tires could increase your risk of a tire blowout.
3. Idling for 2+ minutes
Idling your car for 2 or more minutes is not necessary and causes you to waste the same amount of gas as it would take you to go 1 mile. I don’t know about you, but, in my opinion, gas is expensive, and the less amount of times I have to pay for it the better.
4. Windows Down at High Speeds
Driving at high speeds with your windows down can decrease your fuel efficiency. Having your windows down increases the wind resistance, making your car work harder and use more energy to push pass that added air.
Final Thoughts
I am all for all doing as much as possible to get the best use of the gas in my car. The less I use means the less I have to spend on gas, and I love saving money!
