Although head on collisions are not very common, they do make up 13% of the fatal crashes in rural areas. Here are some causes that lead to head on collisions.
1. Driving tired
Driving in a sleep deprived state is not safe at all. Your mind is not fully on the road and can wander or you could nod off into sleep, and before you know it you are drifting onto the wrong side of the road toward oncoming traffic. Dangerous!
2. Speeding
Speed has always been linked to accidents or crashes. Driving so fast makes it harder to control the vehicle when something does happen. This is especially dangerous when the roads are wet or icy. Just slipping or sliding in general in those conditions is scary, but add speed into the mix and it becomes an even more dangerous situation.
3. Driving drunk
Driving drunk is similar to driving tired because your mind is not 100% focused on the road. You can easily get confused or not realize where you are headed when in this dangerous state of mind. Just don’t do it. It is not worth your life or the lives of the people around you.
4. Passing illegally
Overtaking slow cars or even cars driving the speed limit in front of you can be dangerous, especially when crossing double yellow line. Not only is this illegal, but there is a reason the lines are solid here. It isn’t considered safe to overtake and you shouldn’t do it.
5. Objects in the road
Swerving around objects or dead animals in the road can lead to a head-on collision if you ended up having to go on the other side of the road just to go around the object in your way. Be careful when going around a dead animal or a trash bag in the road. Always make sure there is no oncoming cars.
