The Van Went Up in Flames

Our friend, Bobby, from Tip Busters Podcast shares his very scary and unique commute story. Be sure to check out his podcast to hear about the tips from Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide. But first, a commuter update story as told by Bobby.

“I was driving home from Columbus Ohio (at the time I lived in Cincinnati Ohio) in my 1990 Nissan Quest Minivan. For the entire year leading up to that point, I had been the laughing stock of my friend group, as driving a baby blue minivan as a junior in college didn’t exactly win me many friends or style points.

To make things worse, the fuel line was slowly going out, causing the van to smell of a terrible gasoline odor. However, that never stopped me. I loved my car very much.

Anyways, on my way home, my gaslight came on as I was nearing Cincinnati. This didn’t come as much shock, as that car got between 6 and 8 miles to that gallon on a good day. What did come as a surprise is when the check engine light came on 30 seconds later. Being the hard nosed guy that my father raised me to be, I decided to push forward a bit longer. Pride is the folly of man.

My check engine light then began blinking and the harsh smell of gasoline then turned to a putrid odor that can only be appreciated in hindsight. My car immediately burst into flames with me inside of it and I was able to escape with my life and memory of the burning metal death trap that I had learned to love so much.”
